During the months ahead, the Full Moons will gradually shift backward to occur earlier in their signs, causing the energy of the Moon to linger a bit longer after the exact time. In most cases, however, the night before the exact time of the Full Moon will be the best time to celebrate.

Dark Moon in Leo,
August 1, 4:14 am

Best evening for ritual: July 31 (Thursday)

Theme: Penning the Proclamation

The Sun, Moon, and Mercury are closely conjunct at this Dark Moon, which occurs on the traditional date of Lughnassad. The Sun's power is in its full force now, during the culmination of summer. Take this time to reflect on your own personal power, and how your light and warmth spread out into the world. If you were Sun King, what proclamation would you write on this day?

This is actually a total solar eclipse, but it is visible only from the Arctic and parts of Russia, Mongolia, and China.

Questions for this Moon:

How do others benefit from my presence?

What legacy do I create today?

What gifts are unique mine to show and share?

How do I use my influence?

Full Moon in Aquarius,
August 16, 3:18 pm

Best evening for ritual: August 16 (Saturday)

Theme: Manifesting Your Ideals

This full moon comes around two in the afternoon on Saturday here in New Mexico, so Friday night is at least as good a night for ritual as Saturday, since it catches the waxing energy of the Moon.

With any Aquarius Full Moon, the underlying tension is the Aquarius-Leo axis: whether to embrace the ideals of a larger cause or focus on your own sense of self-esteem and satisfaction. There is an urge toward service, that is both challenged and energized by the feeling that personal success must be achieved first.

This Full Moon, however, offers an opportunity to resolve that tension in a potent and meaningful way. Saturn, Mercury, and Venus are all closely conjunct in Virgo. Together, they are wonderfully effective in making things take form on the physical plane, in a way that is not only structured but creative and esthetically appealing. This easy practicality complements the Moon’s Aquarian penchant for abstraction. Furthermore, this impressive triple conjunction is in a close trine with Jupiter in Capricorn, ensuring that whatever we do produce at this time of opportunity will provide a happy boost in recognition, status, and the other trappings of success. This makes the Leo Sun happy. There’s a lot of energy available this Moon, and it’s all good stuff.

This is a time to actually get to work on that wonderful creative project you’ve been stewing on, out of fear that it will be met with criticism, or (worse) indifference. If you apply yourself now, you will be surprised at the quality of the result, and so will others. A ritual or magical working Friday or Saturday to initiate and energize your undertaking should set things off on a strong and felicitous path.

Affirmations for this Moon:

I craft my dreams into being
What I do is valuable and visible
I bring the sacred down to earth
I share my wonder

Dark Moon in Virgo,
August 30, 1:59 pm

Best evening for ritual: August 29 (Friday) or August 30 (Saturday)

Theme: The Technology of Creating

The Dark Moon occurs this Saturday at 1:58 pm (here in New Mexico), so either Friday night or Saturday night is suitable for ritual or divination.

This Dark Moon in Virgo finally brings to a head all those issues Saturn and Jupiter have been bringing to our attention this year: organizing our time and efforts, being productive and successful, and creating something useful for others. The Moon and Sun are only about three degrees from Saturn on Saturday. (The Moon overtakes him Saturday night at about 8:30, which could be an especially powerful time for connecting with the Saturnian energies of this Moon. The Sun overtakes Saturn on Wednesday.) Saturn is closely trine with Jupiter at this time also, an energy which is still building to its peak - the aspect becomes exact on September 8. The Saturn-Jupiter trine has the potential to bring us some very powerful gifts of understanding and perspective concerning productivity and success in our efforts, if only we can take their lessons to heart, which is what the Moon offers us this weekend: a window into the subconscious, helping us understand how and why we work. This is the time to find answers about what keeps us from bringing projects to fruition, and what helps us to do so.

Mercury and Venus have just entered Libra as a team, and remind us that sometimes we can find these answers about our own work through conversation and communion with a friend or loved one. Mars’s placement nearby in Libra can make some of these conversations seem choppy or contrary, but if we don’t fix on those feelings, we can find some good ideas emerging from our interaction with others.

Questions for this Moon:

How do I bring my ideas to fruition?
What does my work give to others?
How can I put my time and energy to best use?
What is my own true and easy style of working?

Full Moon in Pisces,
September 15, 3:14 am

Best evening for ritual: September 14 (Sunday)

Theme: Shifting Dreams of Peace

Saturn and Jupiter are still closely trine at this time, filling our daily life with plans od productivity and success. But this Full Moon offers an alternative to that energy, with the Piscean message to let go of plans and go with the flow.

The message is subtly affirmed and strengthened by a triple conjunction of Mercury, Venus, and Mars in Libra. There is strong energy in our personal relations at this time, apparently disconnected from our pragmatic concerns. With the Moon in Pisces this night, we can unleash the potential for harmony and bliss that resides in our personal relationships. This is a good night to experience the spiritual facet of love-making. (Venus and Mercury are helping physical, sexual Mars feel as comfortable as he is ever likely to be in Libra.)

Magic tonight can bring healing, relief from the stresses of the day, and introduce a dreamier, less focused quality into our lives once more. The energy liberated during this Moon will not integrate too readily into our daily affairs, but it can be a pleasant or profound interlude.

Affirmations for this Moon:

I am fully connected.
I am at peace with the world and with those I love.
The currents of love run deep and unseen.
We will merge in the dreamscape.

Dark Moon in Libra,
September 29, 2:13 am

Best evening for ritual: September 28 (Sunday)

Theme: Contemplating Partnership

The energy of tonight's Moon is quieter and weaker than any of recent months, with none of the other planets contributing much of significance.

This is a time for gentle reflection on our relationships: friends, family, lover, or companion. Question how you approach relationship. Consider issues of power, need, dependency, and balance. If your relationship feels lopsided, tonight may offer some clues on finding symmetry.

Questions for this Moon:

How do I dance with others?
How do I blend giving with receiving?
Where is the center of gravity in my relationship?
How do I share best?

Full Moon in Aries,
October 14, 2:03 pm

Best evening for ritual: October 13 (Monday) or 14 (Tuesday)

Theme: Affirming Your Uniqueness

Like the Dark Moon at the end of September, this Aries Full Moon is basically free of planetary energies, allowing us to work with the simplest expression of the Aries-Libra axis: Being an individual or giving oneself to another.

This Moon offers the opportunity to affirm one's individuality and uniqueness, the special energies, passions, and drives that make each of us who we are. This would be a good Moon for magic to reassert your own identity after a stifling relationship or experience. Conversely, it can be used to strengthen the individual personal energies at work within a relationship, to make them more vigorous and collaborative. This is also a good Moon for fresh starts, new endeavors, and initiating change of any sort.

Affirmations for this Moon:

I am unique.
I act from my own center.
My will is pure and strong.
I stride forward toward my future.

Dark Moon in Scorpio,
October 28, 5:15 pm

Best evening for ritual: October 28 (Tuesday)

Theme: Into the Churning Passions

This Dark Moon finds the five other planets in a strong and strangely symmetric aspect pattern, focused on Mars in Scorpio. Mars is in close sextile with the powerful trine planets Jupiter (in Capricorn) and Saturn (in Virgo). Each of these in turn is in a lose square with one of the remaining planets: Saturn with Venus in Sagittarius, and Jupiter with Mercury in Libra. The Sun and Moon are not connected with the pattern directly, but their presence together in Scorpio brings them into indirect communion with Mars and his retinue. (And, in fact, the Moon will be conjunct with Mars shortly after noon on the 29th.)

Mars is the classical ruler of Scorpio, so he is strongly placed now, expressing his intensity and drive with great determination, either physically or emotionally. Jupiter and Saturn offer pragmatic support. This is a time when our passions can manifest very real change, remaking our personal environment and the interpersonal landscape we travel in. The lightness of Venus and Mercury at this time just causes friction and irritation, as the juggernaut of the three outer planets presses its agenda.

Scorpio energy can sometimes have a destructive intensity, as common sense and others' feelings fall victim to the quest for drama and the need to obtain one's desires. Saturn and Jupiter, however, hold some considerable promise of channeling that passion into something productive and practical. This Moon is a valuable opportunity to learn how to use your deeper passions. It's not a trivial task - those passions are likely to have lots of roots and tentacles reaching into other issues.

But if you take up the challenge to do some emotional excavation work this Moon, it will repay you well.

Questions for this Moon:

What powers my anger?
What do I hunger for?
How does my passion change the world around me?
Shall I give shape to what is hidden?
