If
you've ever poked around the internet looking for a
runic font for your computer, you may have incurred
the same disappointment I did: the good fonts are
not free, and the free fonts are not very good.
Some are just badly rendered or poorly aligned.
Others have odd assortments of characters that omit
some runes or render them in bizarre
ways.
I have
decided to remedy this situation by creating my own
runic TrueType font and making it available for
downloading here. It is nothing elaborate: just the
24 runes of the Elder Futhark, rendered accurately
and simply, so that they can be applied to a number
of different uses.
Download
the Elder Futhark font. (To install, move it into
the Windows font folder.)

The
lowercase letters map to the same runes as the
corresponding capitals.
Note: this
font does include kerning information to make
character spacing more esthetic in running text.
The kerning pairs are only defined for the
capitals, so if you wish to use the kerning, the
simplest way is to type with caps lock on. Note
that not all application support font kerning. In
Microsoft Word, you need to turn kerning on in the
Font Dialog, through the character spacing
tab.
Enjoy
the font!
